The University of Évora was founded in 1559 and for two centuries it distinguished itself for its role in the education of the elites and the missionaries of the kingdom. Restored as a public University in 1973, it is aimed at meeting the new requirements of society. It is particularly devoted to the education of human resources who want to achieve a higher position by merit and good service to the community. The University of Évora has established itself through the high quality of its teaching, associated with perennial values such as mutual respect, desire for knowledge, intellectual honesty and freedom of thought. If you want to share it with us and help build the basis for a future with quality, feel welcome to enter our community, based on the motto (quoted from Camões) "Honest study mixed with long experience".
Évora - the historic city lying at the heart of Alentejo - is heir to a rich and diverse cultural heritage, built and preserved over time. Founded (or refounded) by the Roman and by them called Ebora Liberalitas Iulia, the city was the stronghold that consolidated in Além-Tejo (beyond-tejo) the formation of the new kingdom of Portugal, during the twelfth century Christian peninsular reconquest. Following the consolidating of frontiers with Castela, several kings settled his court here particularly in the period of the maritime expansion. The well-preserved historic and artistic heritage of the city, resulted in good measure of that long permanence of the royal court. The monumental set that these golden times bequeathed to the city in harmony with the urban fabric of popular nature, underlie the classification of Évora as World Cultural Heritage since 1986 (http://www.cm-evora.pt/en/Evoratourism/Paginas/home.aspx)
CIDEHUS - Interdisciplinary Centre for History, Culture and Societies (http://www.en.cidehus.uevora.pt)
CIDEHUS is a research centre in the area of History and Social Sciences that, until 2020, analyses societal changes in the longue durée, in an interdisciplinary and transnational perspective. Its members have selected the South (from Portugal, Europe and other geographies historically and culturally related to the firsts) as a privileged laboratory to observe these dynamics. Besides the research conducted, CIDEHUS supports advanced training in its nuclear research areas and ensures the dissemination of knowledge.
